A microchip cat flap reads an implanted chip or collar tag before unlocking. A connected model can also report entries and exits, change permissions and apply a curfew from an app. Decide whether you need that remote layer before paying for a hub.
Microchip access comes first
Check that every cat's chip can be registered and that a collar tag is available when needed. Selective entry helps keep unfamiliar animals out; it does not decide which of your own cats may leave unless the exact model supports individual exit control.
Sure Petcare's Microchip Pet Flap Connect is a current UK example. Its official page lists the flap alone at £140 and a bundle with the Hub at £225 when checked on 5 October 2026. The Hub is required for app connectivity. Prices and offers change, so confirm the final basket.
Measure before choosing
Measure the pet opening, the entire frame and the depth of the door or wall. Look for adaptor plates or tunnel extenders in the manufacturer's installation guide. A timber door, composite panel, wall and double-glazed pane are different jobs. Glass may need a new panel cut by a qualified glazier; do not cut toughened glass at home.
Plan where the Hub will sit, how it connects to the router and whether the signal reaches the flap. Also check battery type, expected life and how the flap behaves during a broadband or power outage.
Use curfews carefully
An app schedule can help keep a cat indoors overnight, but introduce it gradually and confirm that the lock state matches the routine. Always know how to release the door manually. No connected flap replaces checking that a cat is home and safe.
Questions for the installer
- Will this exact model fit without weakening the panel?
- Which adaptor, tunnel or replacement glass is included?
- Can batteries be changed without removing the frame?
- Where will draught sealing and weatherproofing sit?
- What happens to the manufacturer's warranty after installation?
Our buying rule
If selective entry is the only job, a non-connected microchip flap may be enough. Pay for the connected version when entry history, remote lock changes or household sharing will genuinely be used. Include the Hub and professional fitting in the budget.
