A GPS cat tracker can show a moving position on a map and alert you when a cat leaves a chosen area. It cannot prevent roaming, guarantee a signal indoors or replace a microchip. Start with safety and fit, then compare maps and app extras.
Choose a cat-specific fit
A tracker adds weight and bulk to a collar. Check the maker's minimum weight, measure the cat rather than guessing and use a breakaway or safety-release design intended for cats. Introduce it indoors for short periods and watch for rubbing, repeated scratching, altered movement or attempts to remove it.
Tractive's current UK CAT Mini page provides a useful real example: the company lists 32 g including its integrated safety collar, for cats from 3 kg, and quotes up to seven days of battery life. Those are manufacturer specifications; real runtime changes with coverage and update frequency.
Understand the subscription
GPS location normally needs a mobile-data service. Tractive lists hardware and a separate plan on its GB shop, with plans advertised from £4 a month depending on term. Compare the full commitment, renewal price and cancellation rules rather than the lowest monthly equivalent.
Check that live tracking, location history, family sharing and escape alerts are included in the plan you select. A Bluetooth tag is cheaper and has no mobile plan, but depends on nearby phones and is not the same as continuous GPS tracking.
Battery and signal are practical limits
Charge before the battery is low, set a repeatable routine and test notifications around your home. Walls, tree cover and weak mobile service can affect accuracy or delay updates. A waterproof rating helps with rain, but it does not make a poor fit safe.
What to verify before buying
- Collar release method, tracker weight and your cat's measurements.
- Coverage where the cat actually roams, not only in town centres.
- Total first-year cost including the subscription and spare collar.
- Expected battery life at your preferred update frequency.
- Returns if the fit is unsuitable.
A microchip remains the permanent identification back-up if a collar comes off. Keep its contact details current.
Our shortlist rule
Prefer the lightest suitable tracker with an explicit cat-safety attachment and a plan you can afford to renew. Treat health or activity scores as general context, not veterinary diagnosis.
