Moving water can interest some cats and dogs, and a reservoir can reduce how often a bowl runs dry. Yet every fountain adds a pump, filter and hidden surfaces. Good ownership still means fresh water, frequent checks and a conventional spare bowl.

Start with capacity and visibility

Capacity should match the household and the longest normal gap between checks, with margin for warm weather. A clear level window or visible reservoir is more useful than an app alert that arrives after a connection fails. Place the fountain away from litter trays and busy food areas, on a surface that tolerates splashes.

Pumps, noise and power

A pump becomes louder when water is low or hair reaches the intake. Look for a removable impeller and a route you can reach with a small brush. Mains models suit a fixed station; cordless fountains reduce trailing cables but add charging and battery-care routines. Neither type should be treated as fail-safe.

Filters are consumables, not magic

Carbon and foam filters can catch debris and help with taste, but they do not sterilise old water. Check replacement availability and the recurring cost before choosing a model. Wash the reservoir and drinking surfaces on the maker's schedule, clean the pump, and replace water rather than continually topping it up.

What makes a fountain “smart”?

App-connected models may report water level, pump status or filter life. Catit's PIXI Smart Fountain is a current consumer example with app control; its simpler Flower Fountain shows that running water does not require connectivity. PetSafe's UK range similarly spans ordinary and newer models. Professional monitoring systems are a different category, and none of these products diagnoses dehydration or illness.

Current UK examples

PetSafe's official UK range listed the 4.1-litre Viva at £65.99 and the newer HydroSphere at £84.99 when checked on 28 September 2026. Catit offered several PIXI and Flower models, including connected and cordless options. These are available consumer products, but exact stock, finish, filters and promotions can change. Confirm that the UK seller carries replacement parts before buying.

Our practical shortlist

Prefer a wide, stable drinking surface; a quiet pump you can dismantle; common filters; few crevices; and an obvious low-water signal. App features are a bonus when the physical fountain remains easy to understand without them.
